Bill Macom: Director of Tennis

Beginning his sixth year at St. Mary's in 2024-25, Director of Tennis Bill Macom has already left an indelible impact on the Rattlers.

During the 2023-24 season, Macom won the 600th match of his career and his 125th in the Gold and Blue. He saw Selina Wu become the Freshman/Rookie of the Year in both the Lone Star Conference and the South Central Region and both the men's and women's teams earned ITA All-Academic status for the 13th consecutive year.

In his five years with the Rattlers, the teams have won two Lone Star Conference Tournament titles, a regular season title and have four appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The long-time tennis coach has also had two student-athletes earn the prestigious ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award in Jeremiah Sanchez & Ashley Penshorn.

Macom was also recently named to the women's NCAA South Central Regional Tennis Advisory Committee, as well as the ITA Women's South Central regional ranking Chairperson and the ITA Men's South Central Regional Awards Chairperson.
 
The Rattler women swept the regional ITA Awards at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season as he saw Abigail Csengery win Assistant Coach of the Year, Penshorn won the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship and Senior Player, Angela Vargas won the Most Improved Senior of the Year and Stela Sifuentes won Rookie of the Year. The trio, along with Kyndall Quiroz also were honored on the Lone Star Conference All-Tournament team and Gabi Ioannou joined the quartet on the All-Conference teams.
 
The men’s team earned the ITA Community Service Award for their efforts off the court, while on the court they advanced to the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament and Alvaro Soler, Oskar Irdoja, Jake Faryniarz and Nicolas Llosa were all tabbed to the All-Conference teams. Soler was a First-Team selection as well as being on the All-Academic and All-Sportsmanship teams.
 
In 2021-22, the women’s team became the first at St. Mary’s to win a Lone Star Tournament title, doing so after winning a share of the regular season title. Vargas was MVP of the tournament, while Ioannou, Penshorn and Alice Thane joined her on the All-Tournament team.  Vargas was also the Newcomer of the Year in the league, while Penshorn, Maria Garcia and Marina Vigil were All-Academic, Penshorn was a First Team and All Sportsmanship pick, Vargas second and Ioannou honorable mention. In doubles, Vargas, Bailey Godwin, Ioannou and Vigil all earned honorable mention selections.
 
For the men, Llosa earned All-Academic honors and Irdoja was a Second-Team All-Conference selection. Niklas Knoerr, Pablo Munoz Baroja, Llosa and Faryniarz were all on the honorable mention teams and Chad Nguyen earned a place on the All-Sportsmanship Team. The team advanced to the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Championship and fell to UT Tyler in the NCAA South Central Regional.
 
After losing a majority of the 2019-20 season to the Covid-19 pandemic, Macom led both the men's and women's teams to appearances in the NCAA South Central Regional and the women advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals where they lost to top-ranked Indianapolis, 4-2 in 2021. The women ended the year with a 17-6 record, while the men were 14-5. Senior Jeremiah Sanchez earned All-American honors after winning Lone Star Player of the Year, Senior of the Year, Sportsmanship Player of the Year and Academic Athlete of the Year for his sport.

In his first season at the helm of the Rattler Tennis programs, Macom saw Penshorn win the ITA South Central Regional singles title along with the doubles championship with Vigil. Eight players were ranked in the top 25 in the final ITA Regional rankings, including Penshorn, who earned the No. 1 singles spot. Four Rattlers were named ITA All-Americans and both the men's and women's programs were named an ITA All-Academic team for the ninth consecutive season. The 2019-20 season saw Jeremiah Sanchez earn the South Central Region and National Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. The championship season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 
 
Macom came to St. Mary's after spending 14 years at Florida Tech where he compiled 483 career victories and led the Panthers to five NCAA Regional appearances. 

Macom was voted the 2015 United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Florida College Coach of the Year after his men’s and women’s teams finished last spring ranked ninth and 10th in the South region and 37th and 44th in the nation, respectively. The Panther men registered a 13-10 record and 3.2 gpa and the women garnered a 14-10 record and 3.6 gpa. That season also saw him serve on the NCAA Division II Men’s Regional Advisory Committee and the ITA South Region Men’s and Women’s Ranking Committee.

Macom began his stint at Florida Tech after six years at Division I Jacksonville University, where he coached from 1994-2000 under the title of director of men’s and women’s tennis. While at Jacksonville, he became the women’s tennis team’s career victory leader and ranked second on the men’s victory list. Both programs attained national team rankings and numerous student athletes achieved individual academic and athletic honors during his tenure. He also held the position of adjust professor and the coordinator of alumni and parent relations.

He spent several seasons as a tennis professional in the Tampa area before his arrival to Florida Tech. He became a community leader by volunteering his time with the Rules and Regulations Committee for the USTA Florida League Tennis Council, sitting as the Hillsborough County District Representative for USTA Florida. He was also the local junior team tennis league coordinator for District 11. He was the director of tennis at Hunter’s Green Country Club, a teaching pro at the Harbour Island Athletic Club, the junior tennis coordinator for Northdale Golf and Tennis Club and a head professional for the Tennis Connection. He was also a teaching pro at the Center Court Tennis Club in Chatham, NJ and at Club Med Sandpiper Bay in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Macom was also a USTA Zonal Coach for Team Florida’s 14 and under team in 2007 and 12 and under team in 2014.

His playing experiences include a 2012 ITF ranking of 628 in the men’s 35 and over Division, a 2003 Florida ranking of eight in the men’s 35s, a 2002 Florida ranking of two in the men’s 30 and over division, a 2002 USPTA Florida top five ranking in the men’s open division and a 1999 national ranking of 8 in the men’s 25 and over division. He played collegiately at Jacksonville University in Florida. 

Born and raised in Bay Head and Bridgewater, New Jersey, Macom comes from a large family of tennis players. Both of his parents were tennis enthusiasts and three of his siblings played Division I tennis. His father, Morgan was a nationally ranked player in several age divisions. His brother, John, has produced musical scores for tennis events all over the world.

Macom and his wife, Allie, have three children: Billy, Krystal, and Channen.
